Sound Bytes #2

Late is better than never..

Here's another installment of Sound Bytes, a once-in-a-while writeup of some music I've been enjoying.

Marc Benno - Minnows

Free spirited soul. Blues rock. Obvious stand out track is Speak Your Mind.

Gorgeous record for a dinner party/ family gathering. Definitely in the holiday rotation.

The Youngbloods - Foolin' Around

Put this record on the turntable the other day and when this song came on I couldn't figure out why I never gave it the time it deserves. I think it may be the best song on the record (yes, even better than Get Together). All around amazing album, newly discovered love for this particular track.

The Circling Sun - Spirits

Modern modal-jazz record that evokes a thoughtful atmosphere. Something to have on quietly in the background while you read or while having cocktails. It's like everything I want elevator music to be. Light a candle, pour a strong one, enjoy some jazz with friends.

The Breathing Effect - GEEK OUT!

Reallllly groovy, up-beat, synthy, psyche soul. Not much else to say abt this one.

Pearls Before Swine - One Nation Underground, Balaklava, and The Use Of Ashes

I only just discovered this band a few months ago and they have become one of my top 5 psychedelic folk band. Putting out music in the late 60's and early 70's they had some tough competition in the genre. That said, one of my favorite fun facts about this band is the founder, Tom Rapp, is from North Dakota and as a highschooler beat a young Bob Dylan in a talent show. I was in Okoboji, IA for a weekend and foud the 2xLP compilation of One Nation Undergroud/Balaklava at a local record store. Worth listening to their discography.

Sophie Faith - Freudian Slips

Very rhythmic jazzy soul. Another good track for cocktail time. Also it just released a few weeks ago following two other singles earlier this year... maybe an album soon?
